Firefighters hailed as heroes for daring river rescue

During a recent government meeting, Marion Fire Captain Tino Michener and Private Blake Thompson were honored in the first responder spotlight for their heroic actions during a dramatic rescue on July 26, 2024. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. when fire units were dispatched to assist a woman, Elizabeth Winter, and her dog, who were trapped in the Mississippi River near the Branson Street Bridge.

According to reports, Winter's dog had jumped into the river, prompting her to attempt a rescue. Unfortunately, she was swept into the water and clung to debris alongside her pet. Upon arrival, Captain Michener and Private Thompson immediately entered the river, showcasing remarkable bravery. Captain Michener successfully carried Winter back to shore, while Private Thompson rescued the dog, sustaining minor injuries from a bite during the process.

Both responders were commended for their courage and quick decision-making in a life-threatening situation. Winter received treatment at the scene, while Thompson declined immediate medical attention but was later evaluated for his injuries. The incident underscores the ongoing dangers posed by the river, even at lower water levels following dam removal.

City officials, including Fire Chief Curtis Garr, expressed pride in the firefighters' actions, emphasizing the critical role of first responders in the community.
