New community center aims to uplift Jackson residents

In a recent government meeting, discussions centered around a proposed expansion of the Browse and Buy retail space, which is part of the Saint John's Episcopal Church property in Jackson. The project aims to enhance community support through increased retail space and improved facilities for local recovery groups.

The new building will be situated just north of the ongoing hotel developments and will occupy a portion of the property designated as Town Square 2 zoning. The design will adhere to downtown design overlay guidelines, ensuring it aligns with the character of the area. The proposed structure will feature approximately 21,000 square feet, including a basement, and will serve as a bridge between the commercial core and the church campus.

Jimmy Barts, the church pastor, emphasized the unique role of Browse and Buy, describing it as more than just a retail space; it functions as a foundation for community support. The expansion is expected to generate additional revenue, which will be reinvested into community initiatives. The new design will also provide accessible spaces for recovery groups, enhancing their ability to serve individuals in need.

The project includes plans for a new trash enclosure to improve waste management and enhance the overall site functionality. The existing parking configuration will be adjusted, with a slight reduction in spaces, but the overall accessibility and permeability of the site will remain intact.

Architectural details were discussed, including the use of materials that reflect the existing church buildings while maintaining a distinct commercial identity. The design aims to create a welcoming entrance and improve pedestrian access, reinforcing the church's commitment to community engagement.
