Dubuque moves forward with groundbreaking outdoor initiative

During a recent government meeting in Dubuque, city officials discussed several key agenda items, including the endorsement of a significant community initiative and various board appointments.

Council member Miss Wethal highlighted the Nature Everywhere Accelerator community application, which, if approved, would make Dubuque the first community in Iowa to receive this designation. The initiative aims to enhance outdoor activities for families, addressing a growing demand from young professionals for recreational opportunities. Wethal expressed gratitude to community partners involved in the application process, emphasizing the potential for increased funding for outdoor activities that could aid in workforce retention and attract new residents.

The council unanimously approved the motion to receive and file the application, signaling strong support for the initiative.

In addition to the community application, the meeting included the setting of public hearings for two projects: the upgrade of the water treatment plant's SCADA system and the vacating of a portion of a stormwater detention basin. Both hearings are scheduled for September 16, 2024.

The council also made several appointments to various boards and commissions. Diane Guns was appointed to the Board of Library Trustees, while Bill Doyle and Heidi Pettit were selected for the Historic Preservation Commission. Ross Janes and Renee Kehoe were appointed to the Housing Commission, and Michelle Bequhar and Jim Holtz were reappointed to the Housing Trust Fund Advisory Committee. Finally, Beth McGrath was appointed to the Long Range Planning Advisory Commission.

The meeting concluded with an invitation for public input on the agenda items, reinforcing the council's commitment to community engagement.
