Ponchatoula High School celebrates historic softball achievements

During a recent Tangipahoa Parish School Board meeting, the achievements of local student-athletes were celebrated, highlighting the success of Ponchatoula High School's softball team and Kentwood High Magnet School's track champion.

Mark Vining, the coordinator of athletics, recognized the Ponchatoula High School softball team for their impressive season, finishing as the 2024 LHSAA softball division runner-up. Coach Jeremy Harper, who was unable to have his players present due to summer league commitments, accepted the award on their behalf. He shared that the team had a remarkable record of 25 wins and 8 losses, marking a historic achievement as they became back-to-back district champions and reached the Division 1 state finals for the first time in the school's history. Coach Harper emphasized the team's resilience, noting that they had staged comebacks in several playoff games, earning them the nickname \"the cardiac kids.\"

In addition to their athletic prowess, the team maintained a commendable GPA of 3.51, showcasing their commitment to academics alongside sports. Coach Harper expressed gratitude for the support from families and the community, acknowledging the role it played in their journey. He also highlighted his recognition as the state coach of the year, underscoring his impact as a mentor to the players.

The meeting also honored Germaine Brown from Kentwood High Magnet School, who was recognized as the LHSAA Class 1A outdoor track champion in the 200-meter dash. Brown's achievement is particularly notable as he is the only state champion from the parish, having also placed second in the 100-meter dash. His accomplishments were celebrated alongside the support of his family, further emphasizing the community's pride in its student-athletes.

The evening served as a reminder of the dedication and talent present within the Tangipahoa Parish school system, as well as the importance of community support in fostering student success.
