Community Center Revamp Aims to Empower Local Workforce

Jennifer Olson presented details about the Energy Communities Transition Grant, which aims to support communities affected by the closure of energy plants or mining operations. The city is targeting funds to enhance the Boynton Street Community Center, focusing on workforce development and technology upgrades. The proposed budget for this initiative is approximately $70,204, which will be used to acquire equipment such as computers, audio-visual tools, and a CNC machine to facilitate job training for local youth and their families. Olson emphasized the importance of community input, inviting residents to submit comments or suggestions regarding the grant proposal by the deadline of Wednesday, the 24th.

In a separate agenda item, Ed Davis addressed the council regarding the 20th anniversary of the Veterans on Parade event, scheduled for September 7, 2024. Davis shared the history of the parade, highlighting its growth from a small gathering to a significant community event. This year, the parade will feature a memorial ceremony at the square, with plans for guest speakers, including local first responders and representatives from veteran organizations. Davis also mentioned efforts to secure a flyover by aircraft, although logistical challenges remain. He expressed gratitude for the city's ongoing support and encouraged community members to volunteer for the event.

The meeting concluded with a series of personnel approvals for the police department, including the hiring of three new dispatchers, each of whom expressed enthusiasm for their new roles.
