School District Launches Major Overhaul of Transportation System

In a recent government meeting, officials announced an extensive array of over 20 summer programs aimed at enhancing student engagement and learning opportunities. The programs, developed with the collaboration of internal staff and external partners, reflect a commitment to providing meaningful educational experiences during the summer break.

The meeting also welcomed several newly appointed principals, including Dr. Kiloff at Capital Middle School and Courtney Turner at Claiborne Elementary School, among others. Their recognition was part of a broader discussion on the annual School Leader Institute, which focused on improving instructional leadership and curriculum strategies.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to transportation issues within the district. Consultant Bridal Hedrick presented findings from an assessment of the transportation department, identifying four key areas for improvement: fleet maintenance and management, staffing levels, compensation for operators and mechanics, and routing efficiency. Hedrick emphasized the importance of establishing sustainable service levels before refining bus routes, noting that the current focus should be on ensuring buses are operational and adequately staffed.

Hedrick reported that the district has made strides in addressing staffing concerns, including hiring for vacant positions and enhancing training for bus operators. New technology, such as onboard tablets for attendance tracking, aims to improve data accuracy and operational efficiency. However, he highlighted the need for better fleet management practices, including a comprehensive inventory system to track bus status and maintenance needs.

Concerns were raised regarding the district's reliance on propane and electric buses, which have presented maintenance challenges. Officials indicated a shift away from acquiring more of these types of buses until reliability improves. The meeting concluded with discussions on the urgency of implementing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for mechanic services to address ongoing maintenance issues and ensure readiness for the upcoming school year.

Board members expressed a strong desire for transparency and effective communication with the community regarding transportation plans, emphasizing the importance of having reliable bus services in place as the school year approaches.
