Rancho Mirage tackles power crisis with new substation deal

In a recent government meeting, Rancho Mirage officials discussed critical agreements with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) aimed at addressing significant electrical capacity issues affecting the region. City Manager Isaiah Hagran outlined the challenges posed by IID's inability to support ongoing development due to outdated infrastructure, particularly in a one-square-mile area known as Section 30.

Hagran explained that IID, which provides both water and electricity, has seen substantial growth in the Coachella Valley without corresponding investments in its electrical infrastructure. As a result, developers are being asked to fund new substations, with costs ranging from $20 million to $30 million, a financial burden that has stalled numerous projects.

To mitigate these issues, IID has shifted its approach, now collaborating with local governments and developers to create a more efficient solution. The proposed plan involves constructing a new 100-megawatt substation in the Thousand Palms area, just north of Rancho Mirage. This substation will reserve 20% of its capacity for operational flexibility, allowing IID to manage power outages and equipment failures more effectively.

Rancho Mirage is set to acquire 15 megawatts of power from this new substation, with an estimated investment of over $5.1 million, which includes a contingency fund. This agreement will enable the city to allocate power to developing projects within its jurisdiction, significantly easing the financial burden on individual developers.

While this initiative does not resolve all capacity issues in Section 30, it marks a proactive step towards facilitating development in Rancho Mirage and reflects a broader effort among Coachella Valley cities to address the pressing infrastructure needs of the region.
