Community rallies for safer streets near elementary school

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed a new traffic calming initiative aimed at enhancing safety around Julie Green Elementary School on Hobbs Road. This project, distinct from the broader traffic calming program, is part of a participatory budgeting effort that allows community members to voice their needs and vote on local projects.

The participatory budgeting process begins with budget approval and idea collection, where residents and council members collaborate to identify priority projects. Once selected, these initiatives are put to a community vote, leading to the allocation of funds for implementation. Currently, the Hobbs Road project is in the engineering design phase, with plans to construct traffic calming measures specifically in front of the elementary school.

The primary objective of this initiative is to slow down traffic and create a safer environment for children walking to and from school, as well as for parents in the vicinity. The project has been allocated $75,000 for construction, focusing on targeted measures rather than a linear approach along the road.

Officials emphasized the importance of community involvement in shaping local infrastructure projects, ensuring that the needs of residents are met while enhancing safety for the youngest members of the community.
