Columbia County schools launch innovative drone program

In a recent government meeting, officials highlighted significant advancements in career technical education (CTE) within Columbia County schools, particularly at Columbia High School and Fort White High School. The discussions centered around the expansion of educational programs aimed at equipping students with practical skills and industry certifications.

A key development mentioned was the newly formed partnership with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, which includes a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that extends through 2027. This collaboration will enable students to learn about drone construction and operation, culminating in an unmanned pilot certification. Currently, one section of this program is active at Columbia High School, with hopes of increasing student participation in the future.

Participants in the meeting expressed enthusiasm for the CTE programs, noting their positive impact on students' career readiness. One parent shared a personal success story about their son, who graduated from Fort White High School with certifications in Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and phlebotomy, allowing him to secure a job immediately after graduation. Another parent echoed this sentiment, detailing how their daughter benefited from similar programs, leading her to pursue further education in nursing at Florida Gateway College.

The officials encouraged community members to visit the schools and witness the programs firsthand, emphasizing the importance of spreading awareness about the opportunities available to students. The meeting concluded with plans to organize a walkthrough of the facilities for interested board members, reinforcing the commitment to enhancing educational offerings in the region.
