In a recent government meeting, the City of Norwalk celebrated a significant achievement for its youth sports program by honoring the Norwalk Crush 8 Under softball team, which clinched the Babe Ruth State Championship on June 23, 2024. This victory marks the first state championship in the history of Norwalk's youth 8U softball program, a milestone that has brought pride to the community.
Mayor Harry Rilling presented a proclamation recognizing the team's accomplishments, highlighting their impressive performance throughout the double elimination tournament. The Crush finished with a 4-1 record, notably defeating the three-time defending champions, the Stanford Stars Red, twice to secure the title at Hobe Island Park.
The team’s journey included a narrow victory over Wilton, winning 11-9, followed by a semifinal win against Stanford Stars Red, where they triumphed 14-6. In the finals, the Crush defeated New Fairfield 12-4 to claim the championship.
The proclamation acknowledged the dedication of the players and coaches, listing team members Helena Budnick, Reagan Chiappetta, Ava Eaton, and others, along with coaches Zach Smith, Chris Sable, Rob Linazza, Brandon Tagano, and Shannon Durandigo. The mayor emphasized the importance of the Norwalk Girls Softball organization, which provides year-round programming for girls aged 4 to 14, making it the only youth softball program in the city.
Following the proclamation, the meeting proceeded with standard council business, including the acceptance of previous meeting minutes and a brief public participation segment, which saw no attendees wishing to address the council.
