Homecoming date change sparks community questions and excitement

In a recent government meeting, the scheduling of this year's homecoming event was a focal point of discussion, prompted by a question from local resident Isabella Hamilton Lomax. Traditionally held in early October, homecoming has been moved to September 21 due to the overlap with significant Jewish holidays, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

Doctor Bloom explained that the decision was influenced by the timing of these holidays, which fall on September 3 and 4, and the district's athletic schedule, particularly for varsity football. The homecoming game will take place against Hicksville, as determined by the football schedule set months in advance. The need for adequate preparation time for homecoming festivities, including floats and spirit weeks, also played a crucial role in the scheduling change.

In response to a follow-up question regarding planning for the event, it was confirmed that preparations have been underway since the conclusion of last year's homecoming. Reginald Warren, the assistant principal at Westbury High School, is leading the planning efforts, with various themes already selected for different grades.
