City Council Moves to Sell Controversial Property Amid Safety Concerns

During a recent city council meeting, officials discussed the future of a property located at 2815 East 10th and 0 East 5th, ultimately recommending its sale due to safety and environmental concerns. City staff evaluated the site, noting its proximity to heavy traffic and limited natural vegetation, which rendered it unsuitable for park development.

The council is set to approve a resolution and interlocal agreement with the county, allowing the city to manage the sale process. The proposed starting bid for the property is $1,923,635. Council member Blackburn expressed appreciation for the thorough evaluation presented, highlighting that the site had not been previously considered in the master park plan.

Blackburn raised concerns about maintaining a green buffer by potentially holding onto a nearby parcel, identified as number 29310, which slopes gently towards Green Springs Drive. He emphasized the importance of preserving this area to mitigate the impact of anticipated commercial development, suggesting it could become a gas station. Blackburn also pointed out that Green Springs Drive experiences significant traffic, particularly from delivery trucks servicing nearby businesses and a local school.

The council is expected to further discuss these considerations as they move forward with the property sale.
