City leaders push for vital funding to aid homeless families

During a recent Petersburg City Council meeting, community leaders presented compelling cases for funding recommendations from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) advisory committee, emphasizing initiatives aimed at enhancing local arts and addressing homelessness.

Bill Nicholson, president of the Petersburg Area Art League, advocated for the committee's recommendations, highlighting the effective use of past CDBG funds for critical improvements, including the replacement of air conditioning units and roof repairs. He detailed ongoing projects at the Art Park, such as the installation of new stage lighting and the addition of restroom facilities for children, which aim to foster community engagement and support local tourism. Nicholson noted that the area served by the Art League is predominantly low to moderate income, with over 70% of residents fitting this demographic. He reported an average monthly attendance of 275 at their events, with expectations for increased participation in upcoming performances.

Laverne Talley, founder of the nonprofit Lending Helping Hands, also addressed the council, seeking approval for continued funding for her organization’s initiative aimed at assisting the homeless population in Petersburg. Talley emphasized the urgency of providing immediate relief through emergency shelter, food, and clothing, particularly for school-aged children identified as homeless under federal guidelines. She underscored the importance of collaboration with local schools to ensure that the needs of vulnerable families are met swiftly.

The discussions highlighted the city's commitment to leveraging CDBG funds for community development, with a focus on cultural enrichment and social support for its most vulnerable residents.
