Active Aging Week Promises Fun and Engagement for Seniors

During a recent government meeting, Al Van Dauff, the recreation coordinator for active older adult programming, provided an overview of upcoming initiatives and ongoing activities aimed at engaging seniors in the community. With the transition from summer to fall, Van Dauff highlighted the launch of the fall brochure, which has already seen strong enrollment in various programs.

One of the key events on the horizon is the annual Active Aging Week, scheduled for the first full week of October. This year’s theme, \"Cruise Through Active Aging Week,\" encourages participants to embrace a beach and Hawaiian vibe, with activities planned for each day, including a fall wreath-making workshop, travel talks, a beginner pickleball tournament, and a bingo and banana split event.

Van Dauff also discussed the increasing interest in senior living options, noting that he has partnered with Caring Transitions to offer bus tours of local senior living facilities. These tours provide valuable insights into the options available, including a lunch experience at each location.

Safety and wellness remain a priority, with programs such as improving driver safety classes and a new initiative called \"Car Fit,\" which aims to help seniors adjust their vehicles for safer driving. Additionally, a collaboration with the police department will address senior scams, a growing concern for the vulnerable demographic.

The meeting also touched on the success of the annual health fair, which attracted 32 vendors and approximately 200 attendees this past April. Popular topics included neuropathy and meal preparation, reflecting the community's interest in health and wellness.

The senior club continues to thrive, with membership increasing to 113 and monthly luncheons averaging 50 attendees. The club has also organized engaging activities, including a recent tour of the local fire station, which was well-received by members.

Looking ahead, Van Dauff announced the inaugural Fall Fest on September 29, in collaboration with local school districts and the Saint Paul Farmer's Market. The event will feature live music, craft activities, and a performance by a magician, aiming to foster community engagement.

Overall, the meeting underscored the commitment to enhancing the quality of life for older adults through diverse programming, social opportunities, and community partnerships, ensuring that seniors remain active and connected.
