South Valley Park plans exciting new archery range

The South Valley Archery Range is set to advance into its second phase of development, following a successful initial phase that allowed for the clearing of the designated area without additional costs to the city. This decision was made during a recent government meeting where officials discussed the ongoing redevelopment of South Valley Park, which includes the establishment of an archery range as part of the park's master plan approved in March 2020.

Richard Cockrell, a highly qualified USA Archery Level 5 coach with extensive experience in archery design and programming, has been contracted to create a comprehensive design for the public recreation archery range. His credentials include roles as a tournament field manager and a judge at the Olympics, underscoring his expertise in the field.

The need for a dedicated archery range has become increasingly apparent due to the growing interest in recreational archery in Inver Grove Heights. Over the past five years, youth archery programs have been conducted at Grove and Park, utilizing an outdoor hockey rink. However, staff identified the necessity for improved safety measures and an enhanced participant experience, prompting the relocation of these activities to the newly designated area at South Valley Park starting in the spring of 2025.

The proposed site for the archery range is strategically located east of the well house at the end of the parking lot, with initial design concepts already prepared by Cockrell. The development of this facility is expected to significantly benefit the community by providing a dedicated space for archery enthusiasts and enhancing recreational opportunities in the area.
