City Council Advances Major Zoning Changes to Boost Development

In a recent government meeting, significant discussions centered around zoning changes aimed at stimulating economic growth in the community. The Vice Chairman of the zoning committee highlighted efforts to enhance development along Camelton Road, where a zoning change to MRC 3 was implemented last year. This change was based on an economic development analysis that emphasized the need for increased density to attract high-end retailers.

The meeting also addressed upcoming projects, including a proposed zone change at the intersection of Barge Road and Carrollton, which is expected to further invigorate the area. The council anticipates a project submission in the coming months related to this initiative.

During the session, five ordinances were introduced for first reading, with no immediate actions required. Among the items discussed, two zoning proposals were held in committee. The first, aimed at rezoning properties on Hilliard Street and Borders Drive from residential to mixed-use, received unanimous approval from the council. Conversely, a second proposal to rezone a property on Hogan Road was met with mixed recommendations, leading to a decision to adverse the motion, allowing the developer to resubmit with a revised site plan.
