Mayor declares August National Breastfeeding Month in Shawnee

In a recent government meeting, Shawnee Mayor Ed Bolt proclaimed August 2024 as National Breastfeeding Month, emphasizing the importance of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. The proclamation, presented to Brooke Ewing from the Coalition of Oklahoma Breastfeeding Advocates, highlighted breastfeeding as a critical component of public health, promoting emotional bonds between mothers and infants, and serving as a reliable food source during emergencies. The mayor noted that workplace lactation support can lead to significant benefits for employers, including reduced healthcare costs and improved employee morale.

Following this, the mayor also declared September 2024 as National Suicide Prevention Month, addressing the alarming rise in suicide rates in Oklahoma and across the United States. The proclamation underscored suicide as a public health crisis, particularly affecting individuals aged 10 to 34. Mayor Bolt referenced statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, revealing that suicide rates have increased by 34.6% from 2001 to 2021, with Oklahoma ranking among the states with the highest suicide rates. He emphasized the need for accessible mental health services and highlighted the 988 suicide and crisis lifeline as a vital resource for those in need.

Both proclamations aim to raise awareness and foster community support for critical health issues, encouraging collaboration among local organizations, employers, and residents to create a healthier environment for all.
