Council approves ambitious housing expansion and engineering reforms

In a recent government meeting, the Department of Water and Power (DWP) presented a report focused on expanding Project Powerhouse beyond its current 100% affordable housing model. The initiative aims to enhance housing projects and streamline engineering design and construction processes to meet the growing demand for diverse housing options.

Council President Krekorian proposed an amendment to the report, requesting that DWP develop a policy for expedited approval of switchgear purchases for housing developers. This policy would facilitate the acquisition of larger switchgear capable of handling worst-case fault currents, with guidelines published for developers. Additionally, DWP is to provide fault current data within 30 days of a developer's request. The amendment received unanimous support from council members.

The meeting also addressed the establishment of four appropriation accounts within the Climate Equity Fund for environmental projects. These programs, initiated in the fiscal year 2022-2023, are reportedly not yet ready for launch, prompting the need for fund transfers. Council members discussed the necessity of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with DWP regarding these exchanges and requested a report on the expenditure plan for the heat mitigation home improvement program.

The council approved the items as amended, signaling a commitment to advancing housing and environmental initiatives in the region. The meeting concluded with plans to transition into a closed session for further discussions.
