Community leader calls for urgent action on affordable housing

During a recent government meeting, community member John Connell expressed strong support for affordable housing in Cheshire, emphasizing the urgent need for such developments in the area. Connell, a resident for six years, highlighted the challenges families face regarding housing costs and the impact on local businesses struggling to attract employees due to high living expenses.

Connell acknowledged common concerns surrounding affordable housing projects, such as increased traffic and potential rises in school enrollment, which could lead to higher taxes. However, he argued that these issues are often raised in discussions about any new development, not just affordable housing. He urged the commission to focus on facilitating more affordable housing options, noting that Cheshire currently ranks low in the percentage of affordable housing available in Connecticut.

He pointed out that while there have been approvals for approximately 100 affordable housing units in recent years, the actual construction of these units remains limited. Connell called for the community to work collaboratively to identify suitable properties for future developments, stressing that the need for affordable housing is critical for the town's growth and sustainability.
