City of Brainerd moves forward with historic water tower restoration

The Brainerd City Council convened recently to discuss several community initiatives and essential public health measures. Among the highlights was the announcement of upcoming events, including a booth at the Crow Wing County Fair and a public event at the MP Center on September 19. Additionally, the Flapjack Festival and Touch A Truck event is set for September 24 in downtown Brainerd, with community members expressing gratitude for the collaborative efforts involved in organizing these activities.

A significant moment during the meeting was the presentation of two flags to be flown atop the historic water tower, a gesture from the Citizens Committee to Restore the Historic Water Tower. This initiative aims to honor the city's heritage, as the water tower once displayed a Brainerd flag in the early 1970s. The council unanimously approved a motion to fly one of the flags as soon as possible.

The meeting also addressed the approval of the Wellhead Protection Plan, a requirement by the Minnesota Department of Health to safeguard the city's drinking water. Finance Manager Danny Locke presented the plan, which undergoes a review every ten years. The council is set to conduct a public hearing on this plan, which has already completed a 60-day review with no comments received. The council members emphasized the importance of this plan in ensuring the safety of the community's water supply.

In response to community concerns regarding chlorine levels in the water, Locke clarified that chlorine is mandated by health standards, aiming to reassure residents about the safety of their drinking water.

The meeting concluded with a request for an appeal regarding a nuisance ordinance citation, indicating ongoing efforts to address community concerns and maintain public order. The council's proactive approach in engaging with citizens and addressing their needs reflects a commitment to fostering a healthy and vibrant community in Brainerd.
