Community celebrates 70 years of empowering individuals with disabilities

In a recent government meeting, community leaders gathered to discuss significant local initiatives and celebrate the achievements of Carey Services, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities. The meeting commenced with a moment of reflection, acknowledging the challenges facing the nation, followed by a roll call of attendees.

Kelly Shear, Vice President of Advancement at Carey Services, addressed the assembly, highlighting the organization's 70-year history of fostering independence and community engagement for people with disabilities. She recounted the organization's humble beginnings, initiated by a group of concerned community members who sought to create more opportunities for those in need.

Shear emphasized the importance of community support in the organization's growth, which has evolved from its original name, Opportunity Industries, to its current identity as Carey Services. Today, the organization serves over 500 individuals daily and employs more than 230 staff members, providing a range of services from prenatal care to end-of-life support.

The meeting also marked the unveiling of a $2 million renovation at Carey Services, which includes the opening of a new restaurant aimed at fostering community connections. Shear invited attendees to visit the facility and enjoy meals prepared by the kitchen staff, reinforcing the organization's commitment to creating a welcoming environment for all.

The recognition of Carey Services underscored the vital role of community partnerships in enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities, as leaders expressed gratitude for the ongoing support that enables the organization to fulfill its mission.
