Strike Action Looms as Mediation Efforts Intensify

In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the ongoing strike situation involving the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 31. The union has formally communicated its legal right to initiate a strike starting at 12:01 AM on Saturday, July 13, 2024, with the ability to continue until 11:59 PM on August 1, 2024. This information was conveyed through a letter received by the city on Tuesday, following its signing the previous Saturday.

The Bureau of Mediation Services has scheduled a mediation session for July 12 at 9 AM at the BPU building, aimed at addressing the strike concerns. The strike contingency work group has transitioned from planning to preliminary execution, indicating a proactive approach to the potential strike. They have reached out to other communities and local industries for support.

During the meeting, discussions also focused on a resolution template provided by Flaherty and Hood, which has been reviewed by the city attorney. A key point of discussion was item S of the resolution, which pertains to exempt employees required to work beyond their normal hours due to the strike. The group emphasized the need for clarity regarding the expectations of leadership roles, which often involve working more than the standard 40-hour week.
