City launches million dollar grant program for business improvements

In a recent city council meeting, officials unveiled a new grant program aimed at revitalizing local businesses and properties in Buena Park. The initiative will provide financial and technical assistance to eligible property and business owners, offering a one-time grant covering up to 75% of project costs, with the remaining 25% to be contributed by the applicants.

The program features two tiers of grants: the first tier, designated for cosmetic improvements, allows for grants up to $10,000. This tier is intended for smaller projects such as exterior painting, lighting upgrades, and modest landscaping enhancements. The second tier, focused on structural improvements, offers grants up to $100,000 for more substantial renovations, including storefront upgrades and significant landscaping changes.

To qualify for the grants, applicants must meet several criteria, including being a for-profit business with an active business license, being current on taxes and fees, and having a storefront visible from a public street. The application process will be two-fold, beginning with an eligibility determination followed by a scoring system to prioritize projects based on visibility and impact.

The city plans to allocate $1 million from its Economic Development Fund for this initiative, with the rollout expected in September, pending council approval. The Economic Development Department will serve as the primary contact for applicants, assisting them through the process and ensuring compliance with state regulations.

Council members expressed strong support for the program, highlighting its potential to enhance the attractiveness of Buena Park and support local businesses. A follow-up study session is planned for next year to evaluate the program's success and consider any necessary adjustments.
