Whittier mourns loss of beloved former city manager

During a recent city council meeting, members gathered to honor the memory of former city manager Thomas G. Mok, who passed away on June 8, 2024, at the age of 80. The council expressed deep condolences, reflecting on Mok's significant contributions to the city of Whittier during his nearly two-decade tenure as city manager from 1980 to 1999.

Mok, a native of Carson City, Nevada, had a distinguished career in public administration, beginning with the city of Los Angeles before moving to various roles, including city manager positions in Mont Clare and Norco. His leadership in Whittier was marked by numerous key developments, including the establishment of the Whittier Hilton Hotel, the Uptown Senior Center, and the Whittier Hills Open Space Preserve. He also played a crucial role in the city's recovery following the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mok was recognized for his community service, receiving the Good Scout of the Year award in 1997 alongside his wife, Becky. After leaving Whittier, he continued his public service as city manager in La Habra and later worked in the private sector and as CEO for the County of Orange.

The council plans to adjourn future meetings in Mok's memory, acknowledging his lasting impact on the community and the fond memories shared by those who knew him. Council members expressed gratitude for Mok's leadership and the positive changes he brought to Whittier, emphasizing the legacy he leaves behind as a dedicated public servant and friend to many.
