Transit service expansion promises faster rides and shorter waits

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the operational plans for the Sherwood Micro Transit service, highlighting the potential impact of increased demand on wait and travel times. The service, which is set to operate with two vehicles funded by Metro, will provide 12 hours of service daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, Monday through Saturday.

The transit zone primarily serves key trip generators such as senior centers and retail locations, predominantly situated in the southern part of the area. A simulation conducted by Via, a leader in microtransit services, suggests that the system could handle up to 75 ride requests per day while maintaining an average wait time of under 30 minutes and travel time under 20 minutes, totaling less than 50 minutes for users.

However, officials cautioned that if demand exceeds 75 requests daily, the service could become overwhelmed, leading to longer wait times and potential service disruptions. This acknowledgment of capacity limits underscores the importance of monitoring demand as the service launches, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community effectively.
