Police crack down on illegal fireworks ahead of July 4th

In a recent government meeting, the Quincy City Council addressed several key issues, including the approval of an ordinance granting a variation at 700 South 18th Street and the first reading of an amendment to the Central Business District Revolving Loan Fund. The council conducted a roll call vote, resulting in 11 votes in favor and 3 absent, allowing the motion to pass.

The finance committee reported a transfer of $53,000 and expenditures totaling over $1 million. Alderman Fletcher moved to receive and issue vouchers for these amounts, which was also approved unanimously.

During the meeting, Alderman Ryan raised concerns regarding illegal fireworks in the city, particularly as the Fourth of July approaches. The Chief of Police clarified that any fireworks that explode or ascend into the air are illegal in Illinois, emphasizing the importance of community safety and respect for neighbors. He noted that officers will issue tickets for violations, with fines around $500, and encouraged residents to actively report illegal fireworks activity, potentially providing evidence to support enforcement.

Additionally, Alderman Reed promoted the upcoming Freedom Fest, scheduled for July 4th and 5th, highlighting it as a family-friendly event with games and vendors, encouraging community participation.
