Polk County proclaims welcoming week to celebrate diversity

The Polk County Board of Supervisors has officially proclaimed September 13 to 22, 2024, as Welcoming Week, an initiative aimed at celebrating inclusivity and community diversity. Supervisor Brownell highlighted the significance of this annual event, which promotes the importance of welcoming individuals from all backgrounds and cultures. Originating from the nonprofit organization Welcoming America in 2009, Welcoming Week has evolved into a nationwide celebration fostering unity and belonging.

In conjunction with this proclamation, Polk County will host a free community meal and resource fair on September 19, from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at the Northwest Community Center. This event aims to bring residents together to celebrate their diverse community through food, fun, and conversation.

Additionally, the Board proclaimed September 2024 as Recovery Month, recognizing the ongoing journey of individuals recovering from substance abuse and mental health disorders. The proclamation emphasized the importance of promoting recovery as attainable and highlighted the challenges faced by those seeking help, including stigma and lack of resources. The Board aims to send a strong message of support to individuals in recovery and to acknowledge the growing recovery resources available in Polk County.
