Naperville fights back against illegal historic demolition

During a recent government meeting, Jane Ory Burke, secretary of Naperville Preservation Inc., addressed the city council to commend city staff for their efforts in addressing the illegal demolition of a property at 223 Center Street, located within the historic district. Burke emphasized the significance of the historic district to Naperville's cultural identity and expressed gratitude towards the planning and development team, particularly Lisonbee Laff, for their vigorous pursuit of the issue.

Burke highlighted the involvement of code enforcement and the prosecutions group, acknowledging the city council's support in this matter. She noted that the fine imposed on the developer for the ordinance violation is believed to be one of the highest ever assessed in Naperville, underscoring the city's commitment to preserving its historical integrity.

In her remarks, Burke urged the city to consider utilizing the substantial fine as a foundation for an incentive fund aimed at promoting and rewarding historic preservation efforts throughout Naperville.
