City Council Proclaims July 2024 Disability Pride Month

In a recent city council meeting, Mayor Thomas P. Maximer proclaimed July 2024 as Disability Pride Month, emphasizing the importance of celebrating the achievements and contributions of individuals with disabilities. The proclamation highlights the need for inclusion, acceptance, and understanding of disability as a vital aspect of human diversity.

During the meeting, representatives from the ARC, including Executive Director Amy Newell, were present to discuss the significance of the month. The proclamation acknowledges the barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, such as social attitudes and lack of accessibility, and calls for a society that treats all individuals with dignity and respect.

Newell invited the community to visit the ARC's mural celebrating Disability Pride Month, located at 2820 McFarland Road, and encouraged participation in related events. The mural, designed by local artists, reflects the colors of the disability pride flag, symbolizing unity and pride within the community.

The meeting commenced with a prayer led by a Baha'i representative, emphasizing the shared humanity and spiritual connection among diverse backgrounds. Following the prayer, the council confirmed a quorum and approved the journal of proceedings from the previous meeting.
