Gilbert community celebrates safety with free bike helmets

In a recent Gilbert Town Council meeting, several key initiatives and community events were highlighted, showcasing the town's commitment to public safety, community engagement, and recreational opportunities.

Councilmember Patrick recognized a local leader for winning the 2024 Gilbert Leadership Alumni Award, emphasizing the individual's contributions to the Gilbert Leadership program. He also addressed the recent cybersecurity incident involving Crowdstrike, which affected numerous cities and corporations globally. Patrick commended the town's fire and IT departments for their swift response, ensuring that critical services remained operational and that residents were kept informed throughout the situation.

The council also announced the upcoming \"Last Splash\" event, a free community celebration scheduled for August 17, 2024, at the Mesquite Aquatic Center. This event will feature music and games, inviting residents to enjoy the end of the summer season without the need for registration.

In a move to enhance inclusivity, the Parks and Recreation department has introduced communication boards at various parks, designed to assist nonverbal children in social interactions and skill development through the use of picture icons.

Councilmember Torgeson shared details about the Heritage District Meetup, a networking event aimed at connecting local professionals. The next meetup will occur on August 21, featuring a behind-the-scenes tour of the Water Tower Plaza construction site, set to reopen this winter.

Additionally, Councilmember Koprowski announced a collaborative initiative to distribute free bike helmets to the community, addressing safety concerns amid rising incidents involving cyclists and e-scooter riders. Approximately 300 helmets are available at five local locations, thanks to donations and grants from various organizations.

The Gilbert Symphony also plans to host four free concerts in the upcoming 2024-2025 season, contributing to the town's dementia-friendly community initiative. The symphony is currently seeking sponsorships to cover venue costs, with all performers volunteering their time.
