Community celebrates new all-inclusive playground opening soon

In a recent government meeting, officials approved a purchase order for $38,600 to Newman and Son Painting for repairs at the Marsh House, funded through the county's general fund. The decision followed discussions with Marsh House leadership, who expressed enthusiasm for the project. Although there were funds allocated for the Marsh House under the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), the painting work did not qualify as it is categorized as a repair rather than a capital purchase.

The meeting also highlighted significant activity within the county's fire department, which responded to 582 calls in June, primarily medical emergencies. The department continues its smoke alarm installation program, having installed 63 alarms this year. Additionally, the county is experiencing growth in residential construction, with 24 single-family home permits issued in June, bringing the total to 140 for the year.

Commissioners discussed ongoing road maintenance, noting that 655 potholes have been addressed recently. They encouraged residents to report potholes to facilitate timely repairs.

Commissioner Blakemore acknowledged community involvement and encouraged participation in local sports programs. Other commissioners expressed gratitude for the hard work of county employees, particularly during the hot summer months.

A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the completion of an all-inclusive playground at the Civic Center Pavilion, set to officially open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 31. The event will feature refreshments and aims to attract families, emphasizing inclusivity for children of all abilities. The playground is part of a broader initiative to enhance community recreation facilities.

The meeting concluded without the need for an executive session, and commissioners moved to adjourn after addressing all agenda items.
