Wisconsin schools face funding crisis for students with disabilities

During a recent meeting of the Milwaukee Public Schools Board, significant discussions centered on funding disparities for students with disabilities and the board's membership in the Southeastern Wisconsin Schools Alliance.

Chris Theel from the Office of Governmental Relations presented a report highlighting a critical funding gap in Wisconsin's education system. He pointed out that while private schools receive full reimbursement for special needs scholarships, public schools only receive 33% reimbursement for students with disabilities. This disparity not only affects the support available for these students but also places financial strain on school district budgets statewide. Theel noted that this underfunding has led many districts to seek referendums for additional funding, with projections indicating that up to 130 out of 421 districts may pursue this option in the coming months.

The board also addressed its annual membership in the Southeastern Wisconsin Schools Alliance. The board unanimously approved a resolution to renew its membership and authorized the payment of a $32,100 fee. This decision reflects the board's commitment to collaboration with other educational institutions in the region.

Additionally, the board discussed a request to enter a closed session to confer with legal counsel regarding potential litigation, which was deferred to the end of the meeting.

The meeting underscored ongoing challenges in educational funding and the board's proactive steps to address these issues while maintaining collaborative relationships with regional educational entities.
