New prosecutors appointed amid conflict of interest crisis

During a recent government meeting, the Teton County Board of County Commissioners addressed the appointment of two special prosecutors following the recent appointment of Richard D. Stout as the new Teton County prosecuting attorney. Stout, who was sworn in on August 5, 2024, fills the vacancy left by Aaron Wiseman, who has transitioned to a circuit court judgeship.

Stout's previous role as a private attorney specializing in criminal defense has created a conflict of interest regarding ongoing cases he previously handled. As a result, the county attorney's office cannot continue prosecuting these cases, necessitating the appointment of special prosecutors to ensure impartiality.

The meeting highlighted a collaborative approach among county attorney offices across Wyoming, where special prosecutions are typically managed without hourly charges, aside from travel and expert expenses. This system allows for efficient handling of conflicts, ensuring that cases are prosecuted fairly and without bias.
