Track and field stars shine at state meet

During a recent recognition event, several outstanding student-athletes were honored for their achievements in track and field, particularly in the newly introduced Unified Sports category. This innovative program integrates ambulatory athletes with their peers, fostering inclusivity and teamwork.

Among the award recipients was a student who secured second place in the ambulatory shot put and fourth place in the coed unified 100-meter relay. Jolette Ibanez Sanchez also shone brightly, earning three awards: second place in ambulatory javelin, third in the ambulatory 100-meter, and fifth in the ambulatory shot put. Javier Benito Cabrera received four awards, including fourth place in the ambulatory 400-meter and seventh in the ambulatory 200-meter, along with a fourth-place finish in the coed 100-meter relay. Miguel Falcon and Bryson Chase also made their mark, both achieving fourth place in their respective events.

The event highlighted the significance of the Unified Sports program, which allows ambulatory athletes to compete alongside their peers. This year marked the first time Unified Sports was included in the state meet, showcasing the commitment to inclusivity in athletics. The program required careful planning, as volunteers from the regular team had to forgo their district events to participate, demonstrating a strong spirit of camaraderie and support.

Coach Mystical English received special recognition for his dedication to coaching these athletes, expressing immense pride in their accomplishments. Aiden, one of the athletes, shared his gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the state level and emphasized the friendships formed through the program.

The event concluded with a heartfelt acknowledgment of the athletes' hard work and the positive impact of the Unified Sports initiative, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity in school athletics.
