Veterans group donates life-saving equipment to fire department

In a recent government meeting, the city of Torrington officially welcomed Justin Massimu as the new deputy fire marshal, following his approval during a previous safety meeting. The mayor administered the oath of office, emphasizing the commitment to serve the community with integrity and respect.

The meeting also featured a presentation from Daniel Matthews, a lieutenant in the fire department and commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post. Matthews highlighted the VFW's contributions to the community, including scholarships for local students, assistance for disabled veterans, and support for veterans in need of essential services like heating and hot water.

In a significant gesture of support for the fire department, the VFW post presented a Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) device, a crucial piece of equipment designed to enhance firefighter safety during emergencies. Matthews explained that this technology is vital for quickly rescuing firefighters in distress and can also be utilized for water rescues, benefiting the broader community.

The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts between local veterans and the fire department, showcasing a commitment to public safety and community service. The new equipment is expected to be operational soon, following necessary training for the fire department personnel.
