Gun seizures surge as ghost guns and assault rifles rise

In a recent government meeting, officials presented alarming statistics regarding firearm seizures in the city, highlighting a growing concern over gun violence and the prevalence of untraceable weapons.

According to the report, 210 firearms were seized in 2021, followed by 273 in 2022, and 233 so far in 2023. Year-to-date figures indicate that 115 firearms were confiscated, with 22 of these related to safekeeping issues—instances where firearms were improperly stored and accessible to unauthorized individuals.

The report also noted a troubling rise in the number of \"ghost guns,\" which are privately made firearms that lack serial numbers and are increasingly easy to manufacture. Eleven such weapons were seized, raising significant concerns among law enforcement about their untraceability and potential use in criminal activities.

Additionally, eight of the seized firearms were reported stolen, and nine had obliterated serial numbers, a common characteristic of weapons associated with gang activity. The meeting revealed that three of the firearms were assault rifles, while one had been modified with a switch to function as a machine gun. Furthermore, 40 large-capacity magazines, capable of holding more than 10 rounds, were also confiscated.

These statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced measures to address gun safety and control in the city, as officials grapple with the implications of rising firearm-related incidents.
