Berrien County unveils ambitious trail development project

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the long-awaited development of a comprehensive trail system linking key areas in Berrien County, including Harbor Shores, Whirlpool Development Projects, and Downtown Benton Harbor. The project, which has been in the planning stages since at least 2017, aims to enhance connectivity and promote outdoor recreation through a network of trails.

Chris Cook, managing director of Harbor Shores, and Joelle from Avamar, who has played a pivotal role in the project, were acknowledged for their contributions. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop trails throughout Berrien County, as highlighted by the Berrien County Master Trail Plan, which emphasizes the importance of creating linear trails along county and state road systems.

The proposed trail system will extend from New Buffalo Township to Van Buren County, integrating existing trails and new developments. Specifically, the project will connect the Harbor Shores area, Whirlpool's North American headquarters, and the mountain bike trail, creating a cohesive recreational space for residents and visitors alike.

The meeting also highlighted the significance of the trail system in fostering community engagement and promoting tourism. With four phases planned, the project aims to create a walkable community that links various real estate investments and enhances the overall quality of life in the region.

As planning activities continue, officials expressed optimism about the project's potential to transform the area into a vibrant hub for outdoor activities, further solidifying Berrien County's commitment to sustainable development and community wellness.
