During a recent government meeting in Long Branch, officials discussed significant amendments to local ordinances and presented the 2024 municipal budget, highlighting a continued trend of decreasing tax rates for residents.
The meeting commenced with the introduction of an ordinance aimed at amending several sections of the city code related to stormwater management, as mandated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Following a brief public hearing, the ordinance was adopted unanimously by the council.
Additionally, a new ordinance was introduced concerning tree removal and replacement, which aims to establish minimum requirements to mitigate soil erosion and promote environmental health. This ordinance is set for a public hearing on July 10, 2024.
Chief Financial Officer Michael Martin presented the 2024 Long Branch Municipal Budget, revealing an estimated tax rate of $1.55, a slight decrease from $1.51 in 2023. The budget totals $76.5 million, with the largest allocations directed toward public safety and public works. Notably, while the average residential property assessment has risen significantly, the tax burden on homeowners has only increased by 11.9% over the past two years.
The budget also outlines various city projects, including road improvements, a new pier, and renovations to the library and senior center. The city continues to explore cost-saving measures through shared services and strategic bidding for utilities.
The meeting concluded with an invitation for public comments on the budget, emphasizing the city's commitment to transparency and community engagement.
