In a recent government meeting, Saline County's Emergency Management Director, Michelle Weiss, declared a state of local disaster emergency following severe storms that struck the area on Wednesday evening. The declaration, which is set for seven days, comes in response to extensive property damage and prolonged power outages affecting residents.
Weiss reported that within the first 48 hours post-storm, emergency services provided 500 meals to those without power. Four chainsaw teams have been deployed to assist with debris removal, and the local health department opened a cooling shelter for those affected. The Saline County Road and Bridge department has also contributed resources to expedite cleanup efforts.
As of the meeting, over 125 homes have requested debris assistance, with volunteers managing to clear debris from 35 homes so far. The community's response has been commendable, with neighbors stepping in to help those unable to manage the cleanup themselves.
Additionally, Governor Kelly has applied for federal aid for 13 counties impacted by the storms, although it remains unclear if Saline County is included in that request. Weiss indicated that the state has met the necessary thresholds for assistance based on initial assessments, but it may take two to three weeks for a decision on further federal aid.
The meeting concluded with expressions of gratitude for the community's solidarity and the efforts of first responders and volunteers during this challenging time.
