Harris's journey from immigrant roots to political powerhouse

Kamala Harris, the daughter of immigrants, has a diverse and impactful background that has shaped her political journey. Born in Oakland, California, her mother, a scientist from India, immigrated to the United States to pursue her studies at UC Berkeley, while her father, originally from Jamaica, became a prominent economist at Stanford University.

Harris's early education was marked by a significant experience in desegregation efforts; she was bused from her predominantly Black neighborhood to a predominantly white school in an initiative aimed at promoting racial integration in local public schools. This formative experience contributed to her understanding of social justice issues.

At the age of 12, Harris relocated with her mother and sister to Canada, where she continued her education. She later returned to the United States to attend Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., where she studied political science and economics. This educational background laid the foundation for her future career in public service and politics.
