School lottery system faces overwhelming demand for seats

During a recent government meeting, officials discussed the open enrollment process for schools, emphasizing adherence to state law through a public lottery system. The enrollment period begins every February, allowing families to submit general applications without any screening. This process generates a lottery number that determines how students are selected from a waiting list to fill available seats.

The majority of new students typically enter at the kindergarten level, where approximately 54 seats are available. However, the school continues to accept students across all grades, up to grade 12, as seats become available. Parents are required to reapply each year, in compliance with legal requirements, and a waiting list is maintained for each academic year.

The waiting list has seen significant fluctuations, with numbers ranging from 422 to a peak of 970 students in recent years. This system aims to ensure stable enrollment and involvement within the school community, while also addressing the ongoing demand for available seats.
