City Council Approves Controversial Zoning Change for Redevelopment

In a recent meeting, the Board of Aldermen discussed Ordinance 0-24-22, which proposes a significant amendment to the zoning map affecting a parcel of land located south of Burke Street and east of Engel Street. The proposed change would rezone the area from C Urban Residence, RC, to C Urban Residence with a Mixed Use Overlay District, RCMU. This adjustment is aimed at facilitating the redevelopment of Manard Homes, allowing for the construction of 274 residential units within three to four-story buildings.

Planning Manager Mr. Sandurphy introduced the ordinance, noting that it had been previously reviewed by the Planning and Economic Development Committee, where it received unanimous support following a public hearing. Despite some opposition expressed during the hearing, Alderman Gouvea emphasized confidence that any concerns would be addressed during the planning board's review process.

The Board moved forward with a roll call vote for the final passage of the ordinance, reflecting a commitment to advancing the redevelopment project while considering community feedback. The discussions highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance urban living spaces while balancing the needs and concerns of local residents.
