Voter turnout surges as Carson City prepares for elections

In a recent government meeting, officials provided an update on the voter rolls and election turnout for Carson City as of June 1st. The active voter count stands at approximately 40,271, with an additional 5,000 inactive voters who can reactivate their voting privileges if they return to the area. As of the latest election, 11,581 ballots have been cast, representing nearly 29% of those sent out. Election clerks expressed concerns over the lengthy early voting period of two weeks, which they deemed costly and inefficient, averaging only 15-200 votes per day. They plan to advocate for legislative changes to address these issues.

Mail-in voting has seen a significant uptick, with 7,568 ballots submitted—half of which were mailed through the U.S. Postal Service, while the other half were dropped off at designated locations, indicating a potential lack of trust in postal services.

The meeting also highlighted key election results, including Democratic candidate Jackie Rosen's victory in the Senate race and Republican Sam Brown's nomination, setting the stage for a competitive contest in November. Other notable outcomes included Mark Amaday winning the Republican nomination for the House of Representatives and a runoff for Trustee District 7 between Michelle Peterson and John Henley, as neither secured the required majority.
