Officials urge caution as red flag warnings increase wildfire risk

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the management of the Prison Hill Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area during red flag warning days, which are issued by the National Weather Service when conditions are hot, windy, and dry, increasing the risk of wildfires. Since 2021, the Carson City Fire Department has recommended closing the area to motorized vehicles on these days as a preventive measure.

Lindsay Boyer, a committee member, highlighted the need for clarity around what constitutes a red flag day and the associated requirements. The current approach, described as a \"best management practice,\" lacks formal policy backing, leading to challenges in enforcement. Physical closures of the 900-acre site have proven difficult due to the absence of gates and limited staffing, particularly on weekends when warnings can be issued at inconvenient times.

To address these challenges, officials have shifted focus from physical closures to enhanced signage and public outreach. This includes social media notifications and permanent information on the city’s website. Despite these efforts, a recent red flag warning was missed, prompting park rangers to quickly install signage at the site entrances.

The committee emphasized the importance of empowering recreational users to stay informed about fire risks, encouraging them to check conditions before heading out. Plans are in place for further discussions with the fire chief to explore more efficient communication strategies for the upcoming summer season.
