County tackles barriers to fair housing in new report

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed the critical update to the analysis of impediments to fair housing in Richland County, a requirement for recipients of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). Jotica, a key presenter, highlighted the completion of a comprehensive report that identifies significant barriers to fair housing choice, which is due for submission to the state by the end of the month.

The report, which combines both qualitative and quantitative analyses, reveals several pressing concerns. The primary issue identified is the inadequate supply of safe and affordable housing for lower-income households. Additionally, the lack of accessibility improvements in older housing stock was noted as a significant impediment. The county is encouraged to continue its efforts through existing programs like CDBG and the Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP).

Transportation access was also emphasized as a critical factor in improving housing opportunities, alongside the need for enhanced financial literacy to support homeownership. The county is actively collaborating with the city of Mansfield to provide workshops aimed at addressing these challenges.
