PTAs unite to tackle food insecurity in schools

As the new school year approaches, the North Shore Council PTSA is actively encouraging community involvement and addressing pressing issues such as food insecurity. During a recent meeting, co-VP of Advocacy highlighted the importance of joining local PTAs, especially as many are participating in back-to-school events. While some PTAs are transitioning to a new membership platform, a roundtable discussion is scheduled for September 10th to assist those facing challenges.

In addition to membership updates, the PTSA is hosting office hours on August 29th to discuss potential changes to standing rules, including the introduction of PTA credit cards. The first general membership meeting is set for September 16th, and grant applications are currently being accepted, with a flexible deadline to accommodate submissions.

A significant focus of the meeting was on food insecurity, a growing concern among PTA leaders. The co-VP noted that many schools are implementing programs such as school pantries and snack shacks to support students in need. Despite perceptions of affluence in the community, the demand for these resources is increasing, with school lunch debt reported at $100,000, down from $125,000 due to community donations.

The PTSA is committed to collaborating with local organizations to address these challenges and is eager to expand its efforts in the coming year. The meeting concluded with a motion to adopt the consent agenda, which passed without discussion, and a call for new business items from board members.
