Students clinch national championship in speech and debate

The regular meeting of the local school board convened on Thursday, July 11th, with a focus on celebrating student achievements and community engagement. The meeting commenced with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the approval of the minutes from the previous meeting held on June 20th.

During the open forum segment, no community members came forward to speak, allowing the meeting to transition smoothly to the highlight of the evening: the recognition of student champions. Gary, a board member, took the opportunity to honor two exceptional students from Jeff City High School, Harrison Lane and Towns Baker, who recently clinched the National Championship in Duo Interpretation at the National Catholic Forensics League Tournament in Chicago.

Both students have demonstrated remarkable talent and dedication throughout their high school careers, with Harrison setting records for individual trophies and points in the National Speech and Debate Association. Towns has also excelled, ranking among the top participants in the program. Their duo interpretation performance has consistently placed in the top three at various tournaments this season.

Before their performance, Harrison provided a brief synopsis of their piece, a 10-minute adaptation of the vampire mockumentary \"What We Do in the Shadows.\" The performance, adhering to the strict rules of the event, showcased their skills without any physical interaction, emphasizing their creativity and teamwork.

The meeting underscored the importance of recognizing student achievements and fostering a supportive environment for young talent within the community.
