City Council Considers Expanding Alcohol Sales in Downtown District

During a recent public hearing, the Valdosta City Council addressed a request from Lawrence Thomas regarding the potential use of a property located at 4601 Blackwater Drive. Thomas, who purchased the property with the intention of renovating it for either residential or office professional use, expressed his desire to market the property flexibly. He noted that there had been confusion about its zoning classification, which he clarified was suitable for single-family residential use under the office professional designation. The council confirmed that while the property could be used for a single residence, it would not permit duplexes or apartments.

The council unanimously approved the request, allowing Thomas to proceed with his plans for the property.

In addition to the property discussion, the council also considered an ordinance to amend the city’s alcohol regulations, particularly concerning the downtown Valdosta Entertainment District. Kim Hughes, the Main Street manager, outlined the history of the alcohol ordinance, which was initially revised in April 2021 to permit off-premise alcohol consumption in the district. Subsequent amendments allowed for beer-only establishments and exempted certain food service requirements. The latest proposal from downtown business owners seeks to include distilled spirits in the exemptions, which will be further discussed in a second reading at the next council meeting.

The council's actions reflect ongoing efforts to adapt local regulations to support business development and community needs in Valdosta.
