Peoria County plans major economic boost with new project

In a recent government meeting, officials discussed significant initiatives aimed at economic development and small business support in Peoria County. A key focus was on the Galena Road project, which aims to establish a \"super site\" for businesses on over 100 acres. Member Williams emphasized the importance of this project, highlighting ongoing discussions with other board members to identify potential sites.

Concerns were raised regarding the definition of \"small business\" in relation to funding eligibility. Member Ricker cautioned that contributions to the park should not inadvertently exclude larger companies that may wish to establish operations in the area. The discussion revealed two definitions of small businesses: one with a limit of 50 employees and another with a threshold of 500 employees. Member Blair confirmed that the latter is commonly used by the Small Business Administration.

The meeting also addressed the allocation of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Officials noted that Peoria County's estimated revenue loss from 2020 to 2024 is projected at $74 million, significantly exceeding the county's allocation of $34.8 million. This revenue loss can be utilized for various government services, including small business initiatives, providing flexibility in funding categorization.
