Peoria County honors LGBTQ community and youth sports legacy

During a recent Peoria County Board meeting, two significant proclamations were made, highlighting the county's commitment to community support and recognition of local organizations.

The first proclamation honored Peoria Proud in celebration of Pride Month. Chairman James C. Dillon presented the proclamation, acknowledging Peoria Proud's dedication to promoting equity and diversity within the community. He emphasized the organization's role in creating safe spaces for marginalized groups and its efforts in providing resources for the LGBTQ+ community, including mental health support and connections to affirming faith communities. The proclamation also announced the upcoming PureA Pride Fest, scheduled for July 20, 2024, inviting community members to participate in the festivities. Kathy Renault, representing Peoria Proud, expressed gratitude for the recognition, underscoring the importance of community support for LGBTQ+ individuals.

The second proclamation celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Limestone Girls Softball Association (LGSA). Chairman Dillon recognized the association's long-standing commitment to youth sports in the area, detailing its history and achievements, including the establishment of travel teams and the induction into the American Softball Hall of Fame in 2012. Chris Yocum, the LGSA president, highlighted the program's growth, which serves approximately 210 girls annually, and expressed appreciation for the board's recognition.

Both proclamations reflect Peoria County's ongoing efforts to support diverse community initiatives and celebrate local achievements, fostering a sense of unity and pride among residents.
